What to Expect
Your Consultation
We understand that a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. From your very first appointment, our aim is to make you feel listened to, informed and confident about the path ahead.
Your Consultation Journey
Getting a Referral
A referral letter from another clinician (your GP or a hospital consultant) is needed to book an appointment. New patient consultations are scheduled for one hour, and follow-up appointments for 30 minutes. Contact Laura, Dr Burcombe's secretary, to arrange your appointment.
What to Bring
Please bring details of your current and recent symptoms, past medical history, any previous operations, known drug allergies, and a list of current medications or a copy of your repeat prescription. If any relatives have been treated for cancer, bring details of their diagnosis and treatment as this helps determine whether genetic screening may be needed.
Your First Consultation
Dr Burcombe will take the time to review your diagnosis, explain your options clearly and answer any questions. You are welcome to bring someone with you for support. Many patients find it helpful to prepare a list of questions beforehand. Understanding your family situation is also important, as cancer affects the whole family and relatives may be involved in discussions about your care.
Your Treatment Plan
A personalised treatment plan will be discussed with you, covering the recommended treatments, what to expect, potential side effects and timelines. Comprehensive information is provided so you feel confident and informed. Dr Burcombe believes that comprehensive information, conveyed clearly, helps people feel more confident and at ease.
Ongoing Support
Dr Burcombe and his team are approachable and available for advice and support throughout your treatment and beyond. Follow-up appointments, the Carebit patient portal and the Patient Journey App help keep you informed every step of the way. Private clinics are held weekly on Thursday afternoons at GenesisCare Maidstone, with occasional Saturday mornings at Nuffield Health Tunbridge Wells.
